The Truth about ligament release surgery : myths vs facts

Many myths surround ligament release surgery. Here we set out the truth from the myths.

Ligament release surgery, also known as penile lengthening surgery or penis elongation surgery, is one of the most discussed male enhancement procedures. Unfortunately, much of what is written online about it — especially by clinics promoting non-surgical alternatives — is misleading or simply incorrect. Ligament release surgery is just one part of penis enlargement surgery, usually performed together with a fat transfer for extra penis girth.

At Moorgate Andrology, we perform this procedure under the care of qualified Consultant Urologists with many years of experience. Below, we separate fact from fiction to help you make an informed choice.

Myth 1: Ligament release surgery is unsafe

Fact:
When performed by a specialist Urologist in a regulated clinic, ligament release surgery is a safe and low-risk procedure. It is carried out under general anaesthetic, and patients usually return home the same day.

Like any minor surgery, there are some risks such as temporary swelling or bruising, but serious complications are rare. At Moorgate Andrology, every patient undergoes a full pre-operative assessment to ensure suitability and safety. Men choose this surgery when they want additional length and instead of temporary penis fillers which only increase penis girth not length.

Myth 2: The results are not real or don’t last

Fact:
The surgery provides a permanent increase in flaccid length by releasing the suspensory ligament that anchors the penis to the pubic bone. This allows more of the internal portion of the penis to extend externally.

Most men gain around one inch in visible flaccid length. Post-surgery, the use of a penis extender device for several months helps to maintain and potentially enhance results over time.

Myth 3: It only changes the flaccid length

Fact:
While the main benefit is an increase in flaccid length, some patients also report a visual improvement in erect length and overall penis appearance. The increase in confidence is one of the biggest outcomes for men undergoing this procedure. We do not perform ligament release surgery to increae erect length though since gains in erect length are marginal.

Myth 4: It causes erection problems

Fact:
This is a common misconception. The ligament that is released does not affect erectile function or the ability to maintain an erection. The erection angle may lower slightly after surgery, which is entirely normal and does not affect performance or sensation.
